What are the main applications of extruder melt pumps? In plastic extrusion production lines, melt gear pumps can be used in production lines for sheet, plate, film, pipe, profile, wire drawing, cable and recycled pelletisation. Melt pumps are typically installed between the extruder and the die to stabilise pressure, convey and meter the melt. As the materials processed, output rates and downstream resistance vary across different production lines, so do the requirements for melt pressure and flow rate; consequently, the selection of a melt pump must be based on actual operating conditions.
In sheet and slab extrusion production lines, once the material has been plastified, it is continuously fed to the die via a melt pump. This helps to minimise the impact of pressure fluctuations on sheet thickness and the condition of the extruded material, thereby effectively reducing the scrap rate.
In film extrusion production lines, fluctuations in flow rate can affect film thickness and, consequently, quality. Melt pumps can be used in cast film, thin film and certain multi-layer co-extrusion systems; by stabilising the melt flow rate entering the die, they provide more consistent feed conditions for subsequent film formation.
In pipe and profile extrusion production, changes in resistance at the downstream die may cause pressure fluctuations. Configuring a melt pump according to actual production conditions ensures a more continuous flow of material into the mould.
In plastic filament drawing and cable extrusion production lines, melt pumps can be used for the continuous conveyance of PP, PE and other polymer materials. For filament products, a stable feed facilitates control over filament dimensions.
Furthermore, the use of extruder melt pumps in recycled plastic pelletising lines is also relatively common. As recycled materials contain a relatively high level of impurities, a screen changer is typically required for filtration during the production process. Melt pumps can be installed either upstream or downstream of the filtration system according to process requirements, working in conjunction with screen changers, die heads and pelletising equipment; they are suitable for the pelletisation of PET, PE, PP and modified plastics.
