Solutions for the extrusion of high-viscosity materials involve more than simply supplying a pump; they also require selecting the appropriate pump model based on actual operating conditions, such as material viscosity, operating temperature, inlet and outlet pressures, flow rate and installation location. Rubber gear pumps are primarily used for the continuous conveyance of rubber and high-viscosity elastomer materials, establishing the required pressure for extrusion production and minimising fluctuations in material output.
Rubber materials have high viscosity and are relatively sensitive to temperature changes. The pump housing of a rubber gear pump is fitted with a water inlet; once water is introduced, it regulates the material’s temperature to prevent scorching. A rubber gear pump uses a pair of meshing gears to convey the material from the inlet along both sides of the pump chamber wall to the outlet. This positive displacement method ensures a relatively stable volume of material discharged per revolution, facilitating the adjustment of production line flow rate and outlet pressure, and enabling more precise control over the production process.
Rubber gear pumps operate on a similar principle to conventional melt pumps, but the state of the material and structural requirements differ. Melt pumps are commonly used for pressurising, stabilising the pressure and metering plastic melts; rubber gear pumps must also account for the high viscosity of elastomers, feed conditions and temperature.
On production lines handling materials containing impurities or recycled components, a screen changer may be fitted in accordance with filtration requirements to intercept impurities, carbon deposits and inadequately plastified particles, whilst the rubber gear pump or melt pump is responsible for subsequent conveyance and pressure stabilisation. The specific installation sequence must be determined in accordance with the material’s state, inlet pressure and filtration resistance to prevent insufficient feed from affecting pump operation.
