In production processes such as hot-melt adhesive coating and lamination, adhesive pumps are primarily responsible for continuously delivering the adhesive to the coating head, nozzle or other application points. Fluctuations in the adhesive supply can easily lead to uneven adhesive thickness, localised adhesive shortages or increased adhesive consumption; consequently, the selection and operating condition of the adhesive pump directly affect subsequent processes, making it a critical component of the adhesive supply system.
Hot-melt adhesive pumps are positive-displacement gear pumps, primarily comprising a pump housing, drive gear, driven gear, bearings, seals and a drive shaft. During operation, the motor drives the drive shaft via a reduction gearbox, causing the drive gear to drive the driven gear in synchronous rotation.
As the two gears gradually disengage, the volume of the pump chamber on the inlet side increases, allowing the adhesive to enter the space formed by the gear teeth and the pump body. As the gears rotate, the adhesive is carried along both sides of the pump chamber towards the outlet end. Once the gears re-engage, the adhesive within the gear teeth is expelled and enters the downstream adhesive supply line. The adhesive is conveyed along the outer surface of the gears.
For every revolution of the adhesive pump, a fixed volume of adhesive is conveyed. Provided that variations in adhesive viscosity, temperature and pipeline pressure are minimal, the adhesive supply rate per unit time can be adjusted by regulating the pump speed to meet requirements for different coating widths, adhesive layer thicknesses and production speeds. In certain operating conditions, a single-inlet, multi-outlet adhesive pump may also be used to distribute adhesive to multiple application points.
