How should one select a gear pump for the hot-melt adhesive industry?

2026-06-09

As the hot melt adhesive industry evolves toward high quality, high efficiency, and continuous production, gear pumps are being used more and more widely in the hot melt adhesive manufacturing process. Whether for reactor discharge, hot melt granulation, or downstream coating and spraying processes, selecting the right gear pump directly impacts product quality, production stability, and equipment operational efficiency. So, how should one choose a gear pump for the hot melt adhesive industry?

First, it is essential to identify the specific process stage of the hot melt adhesive. Hot melt adhesives are typically formed by heating, melting, and mixing EVA, SIS, SBS, APAO, POE, resins, and various additives to create a high-temperature, high-viscosity melt. Such materials are characterized by high viscosity, poor flowability, and temperature sensitivity; therefore, different process stages impose varying functional requirements on the pump.

If the application involves discharge from the bottom of a reactor, a bottom-discharge pump should be the first choice. After hot melt adhesive polymerization is complete, the high-temperature, high-viscosity material must be continuously conveyed to filters, storage tanks, or pelletizing systems. Due to the material’s poor flowability, relying solely on gravity discharge often fails to meet production demands. In such cases, a bottom-discharge pump can provide stable suction and continuous conveying capabilities, helping to resolve issues such as discharge difficulties and flow rate fluctuations. It is suitable for applications such as polymerization reactors, adhesive storage tanks, and vacuum reactors.

When used in hot melt adhesive pelletizing production lines, melt pumps are typically recommended. Installed between the extruder, filter, and die head, melt pumps primarily handle pressurization, pressure stabilization, and metered delivery. As high-precision positive-displacement gear pumps, they establish stable melt pressure, minimize the impact of extruder pressure fluctuations on downstream production, and ensure more uniform material discharge through the die orifices. For hot melt adhesive pelletizing, stable pressure and flow effectively improve pellet size consistency and reduce production fluctuations; therefore, melt pumps are typically one of the core pieces of equipment in pelletizing systems.

When used in hot melt adhesive coating, lamination, packaging, spray gluing, or dispensing equipment, a hot melt pump is the more suitable choice. Hot melt pumps are primarily used for the metered supply of molten adhesive, achieving uniform application through precise flow control. For applications such as packaging adhesives, labeling adhesives, hygiene materials, and PUR hot melt adhesives, hot melt pumps can meet the demand for continuous and stable adhesive supply, thereby improving coating quality and production efficiency.

In addition to the process location, several key parameters should be prioritized during selection. First is material viscosity, as the flow properties of different hot melt adhesive formulations vary significantly; second is the temperature range, requiring confirmation that the equipment meets the requirements for long-term high-temperature operation; third are flow rate requirements and outlet pressure, with the pump’s displacement specifications determined based on production capacity and system resistance; finally, the seal type, heating method, and material configuration should be considered to ensure the equipment can adapt to actual operating conditions.

Therefore, selecting a gear pump for the hot melt adhesive industry is not simply a matter of choosing a specific product, but rather a process of matching the equipment to the specific process flow. Bottom-mounted pumps are the preferred choice for discharging from reactors, while melt pumps are suitable for pressure stabilization in pelletizing and extrusion processes. Conversely, adhesive water pumps are better suited for coating, spraying, and metered adhesive supply processes. Only by combining material characteristics, process requirements, and operating parameters to make a reasonable selection can the conveying efficiency and stability of gear pumps be fully realized.
